As many Americans know by now, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma back in July. Since then, McCain has undergone surgeries and treatments, but his health continues to decline. About a month ago, he was hospitalized for an intestinal infection and his family says he continues to recover well.
On Thursday, in an immensely despicable move, White House press aide Kelly Sadler mocked Senator McCain and his battle with brain cancer. Sadler was asked about McCain’s opposition to CIA nominee Gina Haspel at a meeting of White House communications staffers and she responded with:
‘It doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway.’
Sadler’s comments were confirmed by two White House sources according to Fox News White House producer Finn Gomez. The White House didn’t deny the incident and issued a statement saying:
‘We respect Senator McCain’s service to our nation and he and his family are in our prayers during this difficult time.’
Sadler worked previously as an opinion editor at The Washington Times.
Here’s how Twitter responded:
McCain was tortured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and had opposed Haspel’s nomination saying that “her refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying.”
McCain has also been a long and persistent critic of Mr. Trump and their adversarial relationship goes back to 2015 when Trump after announcing his presidential bid, said of McCain who was critical of him:
‘He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.’
McCain spent five and a half years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was repeatedly tortured and spent two of those years in solitary confinement.
