When parents in most developed countries send their children off to school in the morning, they can rest assured and have the peace of mind that their kids are in a safe and secure environment. Whereas this may have been the case for the parents in the United States decades ago, it  is, unfortunately, no longer true. Each day brings with it an imminent threat of another mass shooting taking place, such as the tragedy that unfolded at a Santa Fe, TX high school on Friday, when 10 people were killed by a 17 year old gunman, only three months after the school shooting in Parkland, FL.

As young activists and Democratic lawmakers alike voice their demands for more comprehensive, common sense gun laws in the United States, it seems as if their cries are falling on the deaf ears of NRA-funded, lobby-driven GOP representatives in Congress. Despite the widespread protests and consistent shows of advocacy that have occurred, Republican lawmakers continue to challenge any form of meaningful gun control legislation that crosses their desks. From national school walkouts, to the massive March For Our Lives protest in Washington, DC, they continue to spew their rhetoric for meaningful change, rather than acting upon their words.

With such a wide array of current and former politicians, celebrity influencers, and policy experts voicing their support for gun reform, one familiar face is looking to use his clout to help raise even more awareness for the issue, and hopefully assist in pushing policies forward. Shortly following the massacre in Santa Fe, former Vice President Joe Biden issued a concise but impactful message via Twitter, hoping to rally anyone with even the slightest desire for gun control to take action.

Biden has thrown himself more aggressively into the political ring in recent months, as Donald Trump’s administration and the GOP continue to not only eradicate the legacy left by their predecessor, but put the nation in a detrimental and unrecoverable position. The former vice president started becoming more vocal about gun control following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were murdered by a gunman.

While giving his remarks at a discussion at the University of Pennsylvania, Biden brought the entire Second Amendment debate into clear context. According to a CBS News article, Biden stated that:

‘I think the Second Amendment is being badly interpreted, it’s not consistent with what our founders intended. What’s happened here is the nation as a whole has decided it can no longer, in my view, continue to turn a blind eye to the prostitution of the Second Amendment here and can no longer turn a blind eye to the enormous damage being done not just in our schools but on our streets.’

Biden, considered by some as a highly desired potential candidate for the 2020 presidential elections, continues to advocate against the Trump administration’s disregard of gun control demands from activists around the country. If the hopes of many come true, and Biden does run in 2020, it is likely that the ongoing inaction will land him and his party in very hot water.
