It seems that Donald Trump truly believed the conspiracy theories around Eric Holder and Susan Rice having protected President Obama and Hillary Clinton from prosecution for multiple crimes since he thought appointing Jeff Sessions as attorney general meant that Trump would be protected, too. On Wednesday, Trump called out his much maligned appointee with a vengeance.
Of course, Trump skipped right over the other quotes from that MSNBC segment with Gowdy where the Congressman told his interviewer that, after reviewing the evidence as part of the House Intelligence Committee that there was no spy sent to infiltrate Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and no wrongdoing by the FBI during the Trump/Russia probe.
What Trump focused on was his anger at Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who could not have told him before he was appointed that he was going to recuse himself because he did not lie about his Russia contacts until his confirmation hearing and probably imagined he would not get caught in that lie. He recused himself once the public was made aware of that lie to make himself and Trump look more honest, not to hurt the president.
Trump truly believes that if he had a loyal supporter in charge of the investigation, he would overlook any crimes Trump and his campaign may have committed, even though that would be illegal in itself. The attorney general, by the way, is not the president’s lawyer. Trump has his own lawyers and the White House counsel to defend him and the presidency. Sessions is supposed to operate independently of Trump, although the president just does not seem to understand how the government works.
