No matter how many times Donald Trump insists that there is a law requiring the separation of children from their families at the border, a mythical law that he insists was written and enforced in the past by Democrats, no such law exists. Now, he wants praise for signing an executive order to end this disgusting policy that his own attorney general wrote and his adviser, Stephen Miller, bragged about on television.

Trump complained that ending a policy his administration wrote and imposed would require 60 votes in Congress, but this is untrue. An executive order can and will be signed shortly following this meeting on Wednesday that will end it and could have been signed at any time.
At the meeting, Trump told members of Congress that:
‘The dilemma is that if you’re weak, if you’re weak, which some people would like you to be, if you’re really, really pathetically weak, the country’s going to be overrun with millions of people, and if you’re strong, then you don’t have any heart. That’s a tough dilemma. Perhaps I’d rather be strong.’
Trump can pretend now that he has a heart and has sympathy for the children locked in cages crying for their parents, but he has defended this policy and his own administrative members have even bragged about what they’ve done to these children in order to play to their racist base.

On Tuesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced a bill to end the separation of families and make the process of applying for asylum much more efficient. While passing that bill is not required to end the policy, it is difficult to imagine that nine Democratic senators would not be willing to sign on.
Trump plans to sign the executive order to end the practice, but that order is only temporary. It is now up to anyone with a shred of human decency to get this soulless dictator and his GOP cronies voted out.
