As Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels once said, “if you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it…It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
Trump’s narrative changes and adapts over time, although the basis behind the narrative remains unchanged since its basis is lies. Nearly everything he’s said in Thursday’s Twitter rant is patently untrue, but he’s told the lies often enough that his rabid fanbase believes it.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a Senate subcommittee that he was sure that when Trump meets with Putin in their upcoming summit, he will warn the Russian president to stop interfering in U.S. elections. Just one day after that statement, Trump again stated on Twitter that he doesn’t really believe it ever happened. Repeat the lie and eventually, Trump’s supporters will believe it.
All Trump has to do to continue to make his supporters believe him is to say “Hillary Clinton” or “James Comey.” He makes endless references to a DNC server that was not seized by the FBI although the server was inspected by an outside agency that the FBI approved and that the DNC was under no obligation to hand the server directly over to a law enforcement agency because they were not suspected of any crime; quite the opposite, in fact, since they were the target of a crime of illegal hacking by Russians.
He will just continue repeating these lies because he knows what will happen. His supporters will believe them and when the investigation reaches a conclusion that Trump’s campaign did collude with Russia and that Trump obstructed justice in the investigation, they’ll lose their minds because they believe everything Trump has told them about it.
