Any discussion between the left and right on issues of race will inevitably lead to a conservative reminding everyone that Democrats were the party of slavery and the KKK and that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. The shift in racist ideology that is best described as “the Southern strategy,” as far as Republicans today are concerned, is just a myth. It’s the Democrats who are the real racists, they’ll tell you.

There’s more than a little racism in telling 80 percent of registered black voters who are registered Democrats that they’re just not smart enough to know what party is really good for them, but their argument also lacks an understanding of the words “liberal” and “conservative” along with an understanding of where those ideologies have stood on racial justice issues. It also completely overlooks the fact that openly white supremacist candidates are popping up in elections and all are running as Republicans.

Republicans, in fact, seem barely able to thinly veil their racism at this point.

Former Republican Congressman Ron Paul tweeted and then quickly deleted a racist, anti-semitic meme warning of the dangers of “cultural Marxism.” Punching Uncle Sam with a red fist emblazoned with a Communist symbol (which is not Marxist) are four men who are black, Latino, Asian, and Jewish. The Jewish character is known as “the Happy Merchant” and features prominently in Nazi propaganda.

After facing backlash, Paul deleted the tweet and replaced it with the following:

Cultural Marxism” and cries of oppression by those among the alt-right anytime they’re called out for their extreme racism is becoming quite common. Those on the right who insist that the real racism is on the left have, just in recent days, released a barrage of racism on social media platforms. Steve King retweeted a Nazi sympathizer and refused to apologize for doing so. Dinesh D’Souza, recently pardoned by Donald Trump, retweeted a video on Twitter that included the hashtag #burnthejews and another with the hashtag #bringbackslavery.

It’s odd how the party that so denies its own racism keeps saying the most racist things.
