The things that Donald Trump says and does in the public eye are bad enough; the thought of him meeting alone with no aides or note-takers present with dictatorial leaders of hostile foreign regimes is downright frightening. There is no meeting with any foreign leader more circumspect, however, than that of the upcoming meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

CNN reports that despite the unease any sane American feels about secret, one-on-one talks between Trump and Putin, the president plans to do just that.

‘Trump has shown an affinity for meeting individually with his counterparts before opening the room to fuller delegations. During his historic summit with Kim Jong Un last month, Trump met for about an hour with just the North Korean dictator, joined only by their translators. Emerging from the face-to-face, Trump told reporters the discussion was “very, very good.”
‘He had said before the Singapore talks that he wanted to take the measure of Kim personally and gauge their chemistry. In the case of Putin, Trump has already assessed their interpersonal ties up close, but wants more time to develop the leader-to-leader relationship, according to the person familiar with the summit’s planning.’

The two will meet in Helsinki, Finland on July 16 for their first planned summit. The plan to meet secretly while the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential elections in favor of Trump and the alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign and Kremlin operatives is an odd and unsettling one, to say the least.
‘Ahead of the North Korea summit, some US officials expressed concern about a meeting without any other aides present. Without official note-takers or other witnesses, one-on-one meetings lack any official record, making it difficult afterward to determine whether agreements have been reached. Putin is known as a shrewd negotiator who some officials worry could exploit such a session and extract concessions from Trump.’

Trump has promised to address election meddling with the Russian president, although he did so during the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany and said that he “believed” Putin when he said that Russia did no such thing and Trump tweeted again recently that Putin denies the allegations.
