Donald Trump has been using a tactic he sees as clever since his 2016 presidential campaign and his rabid fanbase falls for it every time. When he expects criticism, he immediately begins accusing the other side instead of defending his own stance.
Heading off criticism is why he attacked his political rival, Hillary Clinton, of “pay for play” through the Clinton Foundation. He knew that stories of the Trump Foundation’s own pay for play scandals with donations to Florida’s Pam Bondi in exchange for lawsuit results he wanted would hit the news cycle eventually, but they paled in significance because Trump had already been striking out at his opponent using this tactic.
Knowing that his private meeting with Vladimir Putin would be roundly, and justifiably, criticized, Trump has begun shouting over that criticism before it can even happen. His son, Trump, Jr., employs the same tactic.
Junior knows that Bill Shine was forced to resign from Fox News because of his cover-up of sexual harassment, but before Democrats can even respond to Trump’s appointment of Shine to his communications team, Junior tried to head off that criticism by calling Trump’s opponents “snowflakes.” Trump’s supporters seize on this tactic as if it’s literally gospel truth, making them absolutely impervious to the real criticism from the media and Democrats.
For the record, Americans appalled by Putin and the Kremlin’s illegal cyberwarfare attacks against the U.S. do not want and have not requested any Russian cities or lands. Not one has insisted on invading and taking over Moscow or St. Petersburg. What they want, what any sane American wants, is for Russia to be held accountable for their attacks against the U.S. Considering that Trump is even willing to attack our allies and call them “foes” to bolster his image as a “tough guy” with America’s best interests at heart, which somehow always falls in line with Putin’s goals, he sure seems to give Putin a pass on even the most dangerous of tactics they use against us.
