While it may seem impossible, the number of Trump’s lies and misleading statements grow by the day. The only people buying them are the most rabid of Trump supporters, but that’s exactly the point as far as he’s concerned.
Nearly every retired intelligence official denounced Trump’s support of Putin and his acceptance of the Russian dictator’s denials about the 2016 election meddling that the current U.S. president touted so clearly, although he walked back those statements 24 hours later. It is only former officials who can truly speak their minds publicly, although even Trump’s appointed director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, did publicly make a statement.
‘We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security.’
Other Trump appointees, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, sided with intelligence officials who have repeatedly confirmed Russia’s election meddling and their continued efforts to illegally hack into American internet servers and voter data in order to influence the 2018 midterms. Any insistence that intelligence officials were pleased by Trump’s siding with Putin over his own government institutions is false, as was his scripted walkback of those statements later.
Trump failed to mention his “misspoken” word during his 10 tweets afterward or during his interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News later the same evening. A president who will lie that badly cannot be trusted, and the U.S. intelligence community already knows this.
Twitter does, as well. See some of their comments below:
