After an extraordinarily rough couple of weeks for Donald Trump, he did what he so often does when trapped in a web of his own lies and corruption: he pivoted to lies and accusations against his 2016 campaign rival, Hillary Clinton.
On Rachel Maddow’s Tuesday night broadcast, she detailed a clip of Clinton that Trump has been circulating on Twitter. The deceptively edited video, in which Clinton calls for a “strong and prosperous Russia,” was originally put together and aired on Russian state television station Channel 1 Russia. It’s not a big leap to imagine who might have brought this ten-year-old edited clip to Trump’s attention so that he could use it to deflect from his own controversies.
It cannot be easy to hear not only lies about your own mother, but such vicious and insane lies as Pizzagate, “spirit cooking,” and deliberate incompetence as secretary of state that led to the death of three Americans in Benghazi. As usual, however, Chelsea Clinton handled her response to those lies with the similar grace and maturity that her mother so often has.
While Trump’s rabid fanbase may buy his lies and believe that the wild untruths that circulate about Hillary Clinton somehow excuse the endless lies and disgusting acts by Trump, Americans with any intelligence at all are not buying it. It’s long past time for Trump to be held accountable for his own actions and stop deflecting to lies about everyone who has ever opposed him.
Twitter appreciated the calm and rational response from Clinton’s daughter. See some of their comments below:
