Self-described democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent victory in a New York Democratic Congressional primary has many Republicans losing their minds. One such Republican is Meghan McCain, who currently co-hosts the daytime talk show The View and had a meltdown over democratic socialism on a recent episode of the show that attracted the criticism of CNN’s Soledad O’Brien.
In response to a video clip of McCain losing it over democratic socialism’s aims to have the rich pay a proportionate share of their income in taxes, O’Brien quipped on Twitter:
‘Full on freak out’

McCain was still in freak out mode when she got wind of O’Brien’s comment, replying:
‘Get a life Soledad – I’m passionate and don’t want my grandkids growing up in a socialist nation.’
O’Brien wrote back to McCain, not too fazed by her turning her ire towards her:
‘I have a (busy!) life — four kids, run a small business, anchor some tv shows, been an award winning journalist for a minute… Watch you’re [sic] video. You were having a full-fledged freak out. It undermined your argument.’
Hi @MeghanMcCain ! I have a (busy!) life—four kids, run a small business, anchor some tv shows, been an award winning journalist for a minute (not to brag ❤️). Watch you’re video. You were having a full-fledged freak out. It undermined your argument. You should work on that. https://t.co/yDUFjQ6QE3

During the original meltdown, McCain dragged out familiar Republican talking points against individuals like Ocasio-Cortez. She referenced the purportedly socialist slanted Venezuela’s ongoing crises and demanded that she be told one location where socialism has worked, ignoring the crises that have been seen around the world under capitalism. The United States is a mostly capitalist country and individuals here die preventable deaths of malnutrition and disease all the time.
She literally yelled over co-host Joy Behar over and over, demanding that those who support democratic socialist ideals pay 90 percent of their income in taxes.
She shouted:
‘It’s petrifying to me that this is being normalized!’

She ignored the successful implementation of socialist principles in other countries in Europe that Behar mentioned, and she also ignored the fact that in reality, there are already some socialist principles at play in the United States. The government already provides community services like roads and the like — and even health care to some — Ocasio-Cortez and her allies just want to see those community services extended to cover more real life needs of Americans.
McCain prefers not to work with the government to improve the deliveries of some services that she pointed out fail sometimes and instead wants to sit on television and complain about some of her wealth being taxed so that lower income people don’t die. What an inspiring individual.
Despite ranting from McCain and others against Ocasio-Cortez and her ideas, she — as a democratic socialist — will likely have a seat in Congress come 2019. She’s running in a district that’s been represented by a Democrat for years in an election season where her party has an around 7 percent lead in generic Congressional ballot polling.
In order to take back control of the Senate — and establish a more receptive body for Ocasio-Cortez’s ideas — Democrats need to win two currently GOP held seats later this year in addition to hanging onto every one of their own. Vermont’s Bernie Sanders — who has campaigned with Ocasio-Cortez — is among the chief purveyors of democratic socialist ideas in that body.
In the U.S. House, Democrats are around a few dozen seats behind Republicans, with numerous currently GOP held seats considered vulnerable.
