Recently, the sitting president of the United States — who you’d hope would occupy themselves with other issues — decided that attacking NBA star Lebron James on Twitter was a great way to spend a Friday night. Former FBI Director James Comey has now joined those defending James and going after Donald Trump for his lashing out.
Comey posted a simple message on Twitter late this Monday morning, writing;
‘Grateful to one of my heroes, [Lebron James], for again showing what leadership, service, and class look like.’
He added the “#IPromise” hashtag to his post, which references the main focus of the initial sitdown with CNN that so irked the president.
The Lebron James Family Foundation recently helped open the “I Promise School” in Akron, Ohio, where the NBA star is from. The school is the latest project of the I Promise Network that James has been a part of. It serves hundreds of students at present and aims to grow that number, providing everything from free meals and bikes to free tuition for the University of Akron upon a student’s graduation from the school.
Trump, in his recent lashing out at James, didn’t mention any of this. Instead, he went after James as dumb no doubt because of his criticism of the president.
The president wrote on Twitter:
‘Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!’
The “I like Mike!” is in reference to NBA star Michael Jordan who, after the president’s attack, expressed his support for Lebron James, noting that he’s “doing an amazing job for the community.”
In the interview aired last Friday, James discussed his take on Donald Trump at times. He noted that the president has been aiming to use sports to divide the United States, and he asserted when pressed as to what he’d say to Trump if given the opportunity that he wouldn’t even take the opportunity.
‘I would never sit across from [Trump]. I’d sit across from Barack, though.’
Trump has certainly proven to be no friend to those parts of the nation’s athletic community concerned with social issues like James. For instance, he infamously asserted that NFL players who peacefully protest during the national anthem to bring attention to the plight of African Americans are “sons of bitches” who should be fired. Trump has held so closely to that idea that he incorporated it into his State of the Union address earlier this year.
Also, as CNN host and targeted Lebron James interviewer Don Lemon pointed out, while James has been working to help at-risk kids, Trump’s administration took to putting them in cages. The infamous zero tolerance for undocumented immigration policy rocked the nation earlier this year when the Trump administration decided to criminally prosecute every undocumented immigrant to the fullest extent of the law regardless of criminal threat. That policy included the separation and detention in chain link enclosures of children.
Even still, in Trump’s world, he’s the good guy and James and Lemon are the “dumb” guys.
