Texas is home to what may be one of the closest races for the 2018 midterms. Democrat Beto O’Rourke is trying to unseat Republican Senator Ted Cruz in what will likely be a tight race. In such a conservative state and climate, it is not a really shock either that a man was accused of committing arson outside Representative Lloyd Doggett’s (D) San Antonio office on Wednesday.

According to the San Antonio Current:

‘A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly setting a fire outside of Congressman Lloyd Doggett’s San Antonio office, police said.

‘The suspect, 33-year-old Richard Casares, lit a fence adjacent to the Congressman’s office on West Travis at around 4:15 a.m. The fire was extinguished promptly and the building suffered minimal damage.’
Woody Woodward, a spokesman for the San Antonio Fire Department, said:
‘It was just a small fire. We put it out in no time.’
The fire nearly reached the office’s roof, but firefighters quickly extinguished it and there was minimal damage to the structure.
Doggett released a statement on his Twitter page, saying:
‘My great thanks to our police and firefighters, who responded quickly and professionally to contain the damage and assure no loss of life, and to my District Director MaryEllen Veliz, who was promptly on the scene.’

Casares admitted to starting the fire that spread to Rep. Doggett’s office, but police do not think he was targeting Doggett or his office. Rep. Doggett served Texas’ 35th district for six years.
