On Monday morning, the president faced an insane amount of backlash over a childish decision to raise the flags at the White House from half-mast. The flags were lowered after Senator John McCain’s death Saturday evening. Donald Trump has apparently been fuming over all the press attention and respect the public has been raining down upon the McCain family, and decided that 24 hours at half-staff was more than enough time to honor the legacy of a man who sacrificed his body and mind for the country, whether his reasons for going to war were noble or not.
The entire country erupted this morning when footage of the White House went viral on every media outlet, and the president has apparently caved to the pressure of so many demands for respect of McCain.
The White House re-raised the flags in honor of McCain Monday afternoon, according to reports.
There’s been a lot of focus on this today, but the White House flag is now at half staff, after being fully raised earlier in the day. pic.twitter.com/MPZvGjnN7T

The minute TV covered it being at half staff — prob news to Trump that it had been lowered — I knew it wouldn’t last. Not in this sick WH. Yet nobody ever resigns… https://t.co/o3lv3aCfJW

Criticism was heaped upon Trump from, not only members of the public, but the American Legion, a wartime veterans organization. They released a statement that read:
“On behalf of the American Legion’s two million wartime veterans, I strongly urge you to make an appropriate presidential proclamation noting Senator McCain’s death and legacy of service to our nation, and that our nation’s flag be half-staffed throughout his internment.”
AMVETS also released a statement on the matter:
“It’s outrageous that the White House would mark American hero John McCain’s death with a two-sentence tweet, making no mention of his heroic and inspiring life.”
“And by lowering flags for not one second more than the bare minimum required by law, despite a long-standing tradition of lowering flags until the funeral, the White House is openly showcasing its blatant disrespect for Senator McCain’s many decades of service and sacrifice to our country as well as the service of all his fellow veterans.”
NEW: The American Legion, the nation's largest veterans service organization, is calling on Trump to make "appropriate presidential proclamation" noting McCain's service & that flags be half-staffed until his funeral.
