Trump Holds Evangelical Meeting At W.H. – Lies About Overturning Law Like A Total Criminal

It’s no secret that President Donald Trump rose to power in large part thanks to the support of the conservative Christian community. Now, in office, he’s still working to mold his administration’s agenda towards that community’s liking — and fumbling majorly in so doing.

According to NBC, during a late Monday meeting with conservative Christian leaders at the White House, the president claimed he’d repealed the so-called Johnson Amendment even though it’s very much still on the books. The regulation prohibits non-profit organizations including churches and charities from taking official positions in political races, and last year, the GOP included a provision to throw it out in a version of their tax reform package. (If non-profits violate the rule, they’re in danger of losing their status.)

The provision, though, didn’t make it into the final version of the bill that Trump did eventually sign. Still, Monday, he told Christian leaders gathered in D.C.:

‘Now one of the things I’m most proud of is getting rid of the Johnson Amendment. That was a disaster for you.’

There are at least two serious questions that arise thanks to that reporting. One, is Trump seriously that out of place that he doesn’t know what he has or hasn’t repealed? He’s made this claim in the past; it wasn’t an off the cuff mistake.

Two — how truly committed is he to padding the way for Christian communities in the U.S. while ignoring the interests of everyone else? Trump seems committed enough to following along after Christians that he has no qualms about — again — abandoning reality.

His claim that the Johnson Amendment is no more isn’t the only striking claim to come out of his Monday night remarks, NBC reports.

In addition, he claimed that violence is on the horizon if Republicans aren’t widely victorious in the midterm elections later this year.

He told those assembled, speaking of the left:

‘They will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently, and violently. There’s violence. When you look at Antifa and you look at some of these groups — these are violent people.’

In other words, he’s again taken to blatant fear-mongering. It’s not even though the comparatively small Antifa groups in the U.S. go out and harass people just for “fun.” They most often show up in response to violent and angry right wing demonstrations. Trump conveniently omitted that part from his remarks.

In his world, apparently, he and his allies can do little to no wrong. Monday night, he said:

‘The level of hatred, the level of anger is unbelievable. Part of it is because of some of the things I’ve done for you and for me and for my family, but I’ve done them… This Nov. 6 election is very much a referendum on not only me, it’s a referendum on your religion, it’s a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment.’

Ironically, Trump himself perpetuates attacks on free speech and the First Amendment all the time through his repeated declarations of “fake news.” His claims otherwise fit into his ever expanding palette of delusions.
