Democrats must be coming out in record numbers. The Republicans have gerrymandered the voting districts in states to the point that the GOP can win with far fewer voters than Democrats. It takes a significant increase for Dems to make up the difference. Yet, they have done just that.
Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum (D) was a long shot, placing third in the Florida gubernatorial primaries. With a boost from Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and an infusion of Democratic dollars, the mayor shot to the top of the list.
Since the primaries, Gillum has begun to lead D.C. House Representative Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by three points, according to a Quinnipiac University poll that just came out. In addition, 50 percent of likely Florida voters would select Gillum. Only 47 percent planned on voting for DeSantis.
The Florida electorate consists of a large block of Independent voters. Among them, 13 percent preferred Gillum over DeSantis, the poll reported.
Communications Director for Gillum’s campaign, Geoff Burgan, released a statement after the poll came out:
‘The Gillum campaign’s off to a great start, with Mayor Gillum raising the resources we need to win and our message resonating with voters across the political spectrum.’
DeSantis’ communications director, Stephen Lawson, released a statement, which read:
‘Polls come and go. What Ron DeSantis is focused on is moving Florida forward by building on our economic success, protecting our environment and empowering parents to make the best educational decisions for their children. Andrew Gillum wants to take us backwards with socialist, high tax policies that would be a disaster for our state for generations to come.’
The representative made a big play for Donald Trump’s support. He showed an ad of himself reading his baby a book about Trump. Apparently, it worked, because the president decided to go campaign for DeSantis.
However, the all-important Independents may not feel the same way about POTUS as the Republicans do. Fifty-one percent of all the polled likely voters in the Quinnipiac poll disapproved of the job Donald Trump was doing.
The Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling came out with a poll right after the primaries showing Gillum with a five-point lead over DeSantis. The Quinnipiac University poll was the second poll released.
The Quinnipiac University poll interviewed 785 people who were likely voters between August 30 and September 3 (inclusive). The survey’s margin of error is 4.3 +/- percentage points.
