Donald Trump is fuming and lashing out against the wave of negative reporting from Bob Woodward’s Fear: Trump in the White House and an anonymous op-ed published by The New York Times by a senior White House official confessing that the president is an idiot and that a resistance against his personal agenda is well underway inside the administration. He’s truly in a quandary now.
He can’t dismiss this as “fake news” and he can’t trash the credibility of someone he appointed himself. Everyone knows that what’s being reported is true, and everyone is focused more on that writer than on Trump. That’s sure to be driving Trump crazy.
There are no questions left about whether the reports are being accurately written, there is only the question of who wrote the report. Was it Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who vehemently denied that he questioned the president’s intelligence when excerpts of Woodward’s book were reported? Was it Trump’s chief of staff, John Kelly, who has openly challenged Trump’s ability to comprehend policy and complained that he hated his job on camera? Or perhaps it was Kellyanne Conway, whose husband has repeatedly and publicly denounced Trump while his wife lied on camera to protect him?
There will no doubt be firings, questions, interrogations, accusations, and plenty more rants from Trump. The question of who wrote the op-ed, however, will drown out his tantrums. That’s one thing Trump absolutely cannot tolerate.
