People have not been apathetic ahead of this midterm election. They have taken a number of measurable actions. Yet, there was one that broke a 93-year record.

Democrats, Independents, and even many Republicans have picked up a new book written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Bob Woodward. He said that he wrote Fear: Donald Trump In The White House to wake people up. It looks as if he has. He told NPR:

‘I am convinced that people need to wake up and not kind of pretend this is just politics or this is partisan. What’s going on in the Trump administration — and I said this to the president when I called last month — I said, “We are at a pivot point in history.”‘

Fear sold 750,000 copies on the first day it came out, according to CNBC. That was the highest number in publisher Simon & Schuster’s 93-year publishing history. It sold print books, ebooks, and audiobooks according to the publisher’s just-released statement.

President of Simon & Schuster Jonathan Karp wrote in the statement:

‘Based on immense pre-publication and ongoing interest, the reading public clearly has an enormous appetite for what we believe, as Woodward says, is ‘a pivot point in history.’

Woodward has written 19 books and a book about every president since his first, about President Richard Nixon. He was one-half of the team that took down Watergate with its investigative reporting.

Of course, Donald Trump was offended. He has taken every criticism of him or his administration very personally. He tweeted that Fear was written simply as a Democratic ploy to improve the party’s 2018 midterm election numbers. He tweeted that it was:

‘A con on the public (with) made up frauds (quotes).’

Simon & Schuster included another bit of news in its statement. It order the ninth printing of the hardcover books, making their numbers reach over 1.15 million.

National bookstore chain, Barnes & Noble noted that since July 2015, Fear:

‘(Had the) fastest sales for an adult title.’

Associate editor at The Washington Post, Woodward interviewed over 100 White House and related Trump sources. In addition, he taped every conversation. The third floor of his home is filled with such documents and tapes, because as he tells his writers, get the documents first and foremost.

The book shows insights into the character of the president and behind the scenes accounts of what this highly dysfunctional White House has been like.  The author noted in an interview with The New York Times that he was not surprised key officials he talked with earlier denied their involvement.

Woodward told the Times that one of the “key” administration officials told him the book was “1,000 percent true,” but he could not admit that publicly.

Some of the dissenters were simply trying to keep their jobs. Those included Secretary of Defense James Mattis, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley,  and Chief of Staff John Kelly. It also included former White House staff secretary Rob Porter and former economic adviser Gary Cohn.

The aptly-titled book came out weeks before the midterm election and right after an anonymous Time op-ed denouncing the commander-in-chief. Other recent books critical of Trump include Unhinged by former aide, Omarosa Manigault-Newman and Fire & Fury by columnist Michael Wolff. The latter broke all records for its publisher, Henry Holt.
