Following Trump’s recent Twitter rants denying the deaths of thousands of people in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, it’s difficult to hear him brag about the response to the latest natural disaster, Hurricane Florence. While everyone is relieved to know that the response has gone well, Trump himself seems to care a lot more when white people in states he won in 2016 are suffering than when brown people who can’t vote for him are.

Trump, of course, made some ridiculous comments during what should have been an easy statement. He thanked first responders and then reminded everyone in his typical “everything is the biggest, the greatest, the best in history” kind of way that “this is a tough hurricane, one of the wettest we’ve ever seen from the standpoint of water…and it’s certainly not good.” Considering there has to be water for anything to be wet, it was a flat fail of a convoluted sentence.
The president also struggles, at all times and in all situations, to express any kind of empathy. Remarking on the 23 deaths counted so far as a result of Hurricane Florence, Trump said there has been a “loss of life…that’s a tough one.”
Trump also mentioned that “the waters are still rising” and advised residents to listen to local authorities in order to keep themselves safe. Considering his response to the news that 2,925 deaths occurred after the hurricanes in Puerto Rico and that those deaths continued after Trump’s visit and for months afterward, it’s notable that he recognizes that lives are still in danger although the hurricanes themselves are long gone.
