President Donald Trump would like us to believe that everything inside his administration is getting along just fine and he’s a stable genius at its helm. That’s not true, though, no matter how many formality-adherent tweets he posts.
Tuesday, he offered up praise for the U.S. Air Force on the occasion of the military branch’s 71st birthday.
Happy 71st Birthday to our GREAT United States Air Force! https://t.co/r9Sa7DJQ76

Ironically, though, just lately news reports have painted him as diametrically opposed to the military’s own interests. He’s clashed with Defense Secretary James Mattis on key issues, like whether or not the U.S. should maintain a presence on the Korean peninsula. Longtime journalist Bob Woodward claims that, after one particularly tense interaction between the two men hinging on that issue, Mattis exclaimed that the president had the understanding of a grade schooler.
Publicly, the president has established his intent on treating the military as his personal plaything — we don’t need behind-the-scenes reporting from Woodward to establish what’s going on.
He’s sought to have a military parade in Washington, D.C., that would cost exorbitant amounts of money because reasons, and he has drawn the military back from locales it’s established itself in for the nation and world’s protection because he wants to impress his pals. His “pal” in this case is the dictator of North Korea Kim Jong Un; Trump abruptly withdrew the U.S. Armed Forces from planned joint military exercises with the South Koreans in the face of, well, no concessions at all from Kim’s regime.
But in his world, he remains a competent commander-in-chief. Really, kids with war toys could maybe do better than him.
