Trump brags that he only picks “the best people” and that his political endorsements all but guarantee a Republican victory (even in Republican primaries!) for his chosen candidate.

In Delaware, that candidate is Robert Arlett, and even some Republicans who back Trump are furious about it. Most consider Arlett “Trump’s guy.”

According to the Delaware Liberal:

‘Arlett helped lead the Trump campaign in Delaware, where Trump garnered just under 42% of the vote against Hillary Clinton and assorted other candidates.  His website for his previous County Council race describes him as…’Principled. Family Man. Dedicated. Business Man’.  And Trump’s #1 guy in Delaware.’

Chairman of the Newcastle County Republican Committee Peter Kopf wrote an impassioned letter of resignation that he released publicly on Wednesday, saying that he could not in good conscience  support Arlett’s candidacy. He wrote:

‘In my opinion, Mr. Arlett lacks the character and integrity needed to lead our Ticket and receive my support. I have supported Republican candidates in the past 46 years that did not necessarily share my policy views but none, however, that I don’t respect as a person.’

Kopf also suggested that “Trump’s guy” had something in his past that led to his conclusion that Arlett was unfit to lead.

‘While Mr. Truono [who lost to Arlett in the GOP primaries] may not have wanted to share critical information about Mr. Arlett that will eventually derail his candidacy, rest assured, Senator Carper has done his due diligence and will not hesitate, nor should he. This is not negative campaigning if it has a direct bearing on someone’s ability to carry out the duties as a U.S. Senator.’

Mr. Truono, the former PayPal executive, placed a very distant second to Arlet in the primaries. During the campaigns, Arlett told reporters when asked what the biggest difference was between himself and the openly gay and married Truono, the eventual Republican Senate nominee said “I’m married to a woman and he is not.”

The committee chairman also blasted the committee itself as well as the Republican Party.

‘As an 18 year old, I registered as a Republican because I thought it was the Party of personal responsibilities and ethics. Our State Party is dying from the inside out and unless changes are made quickly it will be a non-force in this State very soon.

‘I also did not agree to accept my position on this Committee to be someone’s rubber stamp nor should this Committee be treated as a social club to sit around eating pizza and chanting “Team GOP” when it should be acting as a decision making body to bring respectability back to our Party.’

Arlett is currently running against the incumbent candidate, Sen. Tom Carper (D), in a strongly Democratic state. Hillary Clinton won the state during the presidential elections in 2016 by almost seven points over Trump. Sen. Carper won 66 percent of the vote in 2012 and has served for forty years in the U.S. Senate, since 1976.
