President Donald Trump keeps pretending like he knows what he’s doing. Tuesday, he did so in the context of an address he’s delivering to the United Nations General Assembly. The address will be his second, coming the year after he stood before the world and asserted that the U.S. would blast Rocket Man — North Korea’s Kim Jong Un — off the face of the earth if provoked.
In the time since, the global security situation has chugged along without making many paradigm shattering shifts. North Korea still has nuclear weapons, despite Trump’s best efforts to sucker up to the country’s dictator. Russia still continues on with its alternative forms of aggression, maintaining military control of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, for instance. Even less nation-based issues like gun violence and the opioid epidemic still persist. In 2017, some 72,000 Americans lost their lives to opioid overdoses, while well over 15,000 died in gun violence incidents.
To Trump, though, everything is getting along just fine and he’s the savior the world always needed.
He tweeted:
‘Our country is much stronger and much richer than it was when I took office less than two years ago. We are also MUCH safer!’
He doesn’t offer any immediate justification for his claims. He’s just lost in his fantasy world, and what he’s saying is true — to him — because he says it is. Meanwhile, those of us back down on planet earth are left trying to pick up the pieces left by his entitled, mindless rampages.
Let’s just hope the nation can get through this year’s United Nations General Assembly without the president threatening World War III again. The UNGA laughed at him when he presented his claim that he’s done more than any other U.S. president ever.
