This Saturday, the U.S. Senate will be voting to confirm President Donald Trump’s pick to the U.S. Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh — but not before the president can get a word in, again.

Early Saturday, hours ahead of a planned vote in which Kavanaugh was widely understood to be coming out on top, Trump again floated the conspiracy theory that anti-Kavanaugh protesters are being paid.

He commented:

‘Women for Kavanaugh, and many others who support this very good man, are gathering all over Capital Hill in preparation for a 3-5 P.M. VOTE. It is a beautiful thing to see – and they are not paid professional protesters who are handed expensive signs. Big day for America!’

The right wing demonstrators gathering on Kavanaugh’s behalf might not be paid, professional protesters — but neither are the many who have gathered on behalf of the opposition to the credibly accused sexual predator turned SCOTUS nominee. There remains no evidence of any sort of conspiracy to pay those who have turned out to demonstrate in opposition to Trump’s agenda, although he’s made this claim in the past, both in the context of the Kavanaugh scandal and outside of it.

For instance, Friday, he whined:

‘The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad. Don’t fall for it! Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs. Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love!’

The “very rude elevator screamers” include, prominently, two women who confronted Arizona’s Jeff Flake with their own emotional stories of sexual assault after he announced his support for moving Kavanaugh’s nomination forward. Trump must have been nursing a grudge against them for some days — after all, it’s Flake who helped kickstart a renewed FBI look into Kavanaugh’s background in the first place.

Although some who work in activism have taken to demonstrating against Kavanaugh, the claim that there’s a “paid protester” plot is false.

Hilariously, author Kevin Kruse shared a photo of Trump’s own base toting what very obviously aren’t basement-made signs next to a bus outfitted with what’s hardly a homemade logo.
