Taylor Swift has always been silent about her political leanings. Apparently she didn’t want to offend any of her rabid fans. But she’s now breaking her silence and putting her full support behind Democrats in a couple of Tennessee races this year. She posted her very first political message on Instagram earlier today. The first candidate she mentioned was former Democratic Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen who is running against Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) in the state’s Senate race. She said that Blackburn’s voting record was nothing short of racist and homophobic and thus she would be voting for Bredesen because of it.
A recent Fox News poll has Blackburn leading Bredesen by 5 points and Swift wants to see if she can turn things around for the Democrat. She correctly says that discrimination and racism are not values that the people of Tennessee should be in support of. She asks her fans to educate themselves, get registered, then go out and vote. She also mentioned that there have been a lot of “intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people who have turned 18 in the past two years” and that they have the right to make their vote count.
Swift also said that she would be supporting Democrat Jim Cooper for the House of Representatives. It is really big news when one of the most popular entertainers on the planet comes out in support of a political candidate, especially when she’s never made her political beliefs public before. It let’s her fans know how important this next election really is. Hopefully with her support her fans can make the expected big blue wave even bigger.
