Donald Trump will spend as much time as he can praising himself for the release of Andrew Brunson from Turkey. Distracting the public from his outrageous statements regarding Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi will become his main focus until the next bombshell breaks.

It’s a wonderful thing that Brunson was released. Religious persecution is wrong and Brunson absolutely deserved for his government to protect him and his freedoms.

There’s always a “but,” though. For Trump, the “but” is Jamal Khashoggi, as it should be. There are other “buts,” as well, but the case of the disappearing WaPo journalist and Trump’s response are quite prominent in everyone’s minds right now.

It’s great that Brunson was released, but it also makes it even more obvious that there are certain privileges to being white, especially in the minds of the Trump administration. It also makes even more obvious that immigrants residing in this country, even those residing here legally, will never be treated the same way white citizens are. As for Brunson’s religious beliefs, it’s helpful that they align with those who vote for the president. If his beliefs hadn’t, he might have been accused of “tooling around” with terrorists by Donald Trump’s oldest son instead of having the privilege of the presidential administration doing their jobs to protect him.

It’s also a very lucky turn of events for Brunson that his rights were violated by a country that hasn’t paid for billions in military equipment to the United States. When a country does that, Trump is more willing to turn a blind eye to their human rights abuses of U.S. residents. That’s especially true if the country also spent millions on Trump properties over time before the most blatant violator of the emoluments clause got elected into office.

Everyone is glad that Brunson is home (although he wasn’t in prison 24 hours ago. He was released from prison and placed on home incarceration for more than two months.
