Jimmy Carter Calls Kavanaugh ‘Unfit’ – Republicans Lose Their Minds (VIDEO)

Jimmy Carter is one of the most beloved presidents in American history. Not just because of mass of accomplishments during his tenure, or changes he brought to the country, but for his actions after leaving office. Carter has proven himself to be a humanitarian in the purest form. Since leaving office, he has devoted his life to charity, mainly building homes for Habitat for Humanity.

Now, Carter is making moves that have him in Donald Trump’s crosshairs. Wednesday, Carter gave a speech at Emory University in which he called Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh ‘unfit’ to serve, due to the multiple allegations of sexual assault and rape against him.

I had the privilege of hearing President Carter speak today by virtue of my continued research for Hank Klibanoff’s Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases podcast “Buried Truths.” While a wonderful experience all around and a great contextualization of Georgia in 1962, where our case takes place, two moments in particular stood out to me. First, when President Carter informed us that he had read the transcript of the coroner’s inquest surrounding A.C. Hall’s death—A.C. Hall being a seventeen year old black boy shot in the back by two white officers in Macon in 1962 and the subject of season two of “Buried Truths”—and then recounted the details of it. After having visited the site of A.C. Hall’s death in Macon this weekend, in honor of the 56th anniversary of his shooting, where there exists no marker of what happened, and his home, which is now torn down, and his grave, which was untended and covered with vines, it was pretty phenomenal to realize that, in spite of all attempts to forget it, a former president in 2018 is thinking about his story. The other moment, captured in this video below, came when President Carter said that Supreme Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh should not have been confirmed and that he believed Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. And it was really nice to hear that from any president of the United States right now.

The university newspaper reports that Carter said:

“Former U.S. President and Emory University Distinguished Professor Jimmy Carter said on Wednesday that he believes Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is “unfit” to serve on the nation’s most powerful judicial body.”

“The 39th president called Kavanaugh’s appointment “a very serious mistake” in response to a Alexandra Miljanic (19C)’s question as he addressed Professor of Practice Hank Klibanoff’s Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project class. Miljanic referenced Carter’s Georgia Law Day speech, in which he had called for a strong and ethical judicial system, and asked about Carter’s perspective on Kavanaugh’s confirmation.”

““Whether or not [Kavanaugh] attempted to rape [Christine Blasey Ford], I thought he was temperamentally unfit to serve on the Supreme Court because of his outburst during the hearing,” Carter said in a video posted on Facebook by an attendee.”

Only time will tell if President Trump himself will respond to Carter’s remarks. In the past, Trump has steered clear of criticizing the 94 year old, ignoring the statements Carter has made about him. The Donald, however, is becoming more unhinged, even threatening three counties with military force Thursday morning.

It’s a scary time to be an American.
