Shortly after Trump took residence in the White House, news reports revealed attempts by senior White House advisor and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner to set up secret backchannels with Russia. Apparently, Kushner found a way around all of that to communicate with his Saudi Arabian friend, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

According to CNN:

‘Senior administration officials said Kushner’s close relationship with bin Salman was an early cause for concern among career national security staffers, who worried off-the-books conversations with the young prince could lead to misunderstandings or worse. Kushner is known to have messaged with the prince on the communication app WhatsApp.’

As a reminder, the infamous Trump rally chant “lock her up!” is in regards to Trump voter’s concern that Hillary Clinton used a private email server as secretary of state, potentially risking having sensitive conversations unable to be monitored by the government.

Kushner, who was tasked with “peace in the Middle East” when he took his position in the White House despite having no experience in government or foreign diplomacy, befriended bin Salman early on. That relationship made other officials nervous from the beginning, and the recent disappearance of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi now brings even more scrutiny, especially after reports that Kushner allegedly shared classified information with bin Salman during a meeting in Riyadh, including an “enemies list” that led to the torture and death of numerous Saudi government critics like Khashoggi.

According to The Daily Mail:

‘What exactly Kushner and the Saudi royal talked about in Riyadh may be known only to them, but after the meeting, Crown Prince Mohammed told confidants that Kushner had discussed the names of Saudis disloyal to the crown prince, according to three sources who have been in contact with members of the Saudi and Emirati royal families since the crackdown. Kushner, through his attorney’s spokesperson, denies having done so.’

At this time, those statements have not been confirmed by any other source.

Trump’s public statements of non-concern about Khashoggi’s disappearance, in which he’s repeatedly asserted that Khashoggi is “not an American citizen” (he’s a permanent resident) and that Saudi Arabia gave a 1.5 billion dollar military equipment contract to the U.S., have raised eyebrows in Washington, D.C. and across the country.

Once again, the president’s son-in-law is at the center of a growing public scandal.
