Do you remember during the 2016 presidential election when the GOP made such a huge deal about former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of private servers? There was an entire FBI investigation that was conducted then reopened shortly before the actual election and then quickly closed again.
The Trump campaign used that situation to their advantage and the slogan, “Lock her up,” is still chanted at Trump rallies held across America. However, no one is making a big deal about the fact that Trump is actually using three personal iPhones.
Even worse is the fact that no one is making a big deal over the fact that spy agencies are warning that China and Russia are listening to Trump’s personal phone calls and gathering information to use for nefarious means.
The New York Times reported:
‘When President Trump calls old friends on one of his iPhones to gossip, gripe or solicit their latest take on how he is doing, American intelligence reports indicate that Chinese spies are often listening – and putting to use invaluable insights into how to best work the president and affect administration policy, current and former American officials said.’
Don’t think it’s because no one has told Trump he shouldn’t be using his own phone. According to the NYT, aides have told Trump he shouldn’t use his iPhones as they are not secure lines. Furthermore, they can’t guarantee he doesn’t talk about classified information over his own lines.
‘But aides say the voluble president, who has been pressured into using his secure White House landline more often these days, has still refused to give up his iPhones. White House officials say they can only hope he refrains from discussing classified information when he is on them.’
Don’t hold your breath. Trump likes to talk, and he likes to talk bigly. If it makes him sound important, he’ll spill it.
Of course, the White House will deem this fake news and call out the anonymous sources that went to the NYT; however, they say they aren’t doing so because they want to undermine the president. They are simply that frustrated at this point with how careless Trump is.
‘The officials said they were doing so not to undermine Mr. Trump, but out of frustration with what they considered the president’s casual approach to electronic security.’
So, how does this affect today’s issues? Why do Russia and China want to listen to Trump’s phone calls?
Well, we’re currently in a trade war with China, and they, of course, want to win that war. Knowing who Trump’s friends are can aid China as they can reach out to those individuals.
‘In what amounts to a marriage of lobbying and espionage, the Chinese have pieced together a list of the people with whom Mr. Trump regularly speaks to in hopes of using them to influence the president, the officials said.’
Though Russia is running an operation to listen in on Trump’s phone calls, it’s not as much of a big deal to them. They apparently aren’t that concerned because Trump seems to like Putin so much.
Although two of Trump’s iPhones have had certain vulnerabilities resolved by the NSA, his third iPhone is a default iPhone that you can go buy from any phone provider. Literally, it’s like your iPhone.
For all we know, China and/or Russia could be hacking the camera on the iPhone or the microphone and listening in easily. Furthermore, Trump can circumvent having his phone calls recorded, which means transparency is nonexistent.
