Donald Trump has been resistant to any analysis of his rhetoric as contributing to the rising level of domestic terrorism evidenced in recent days. On Sunday, while watching the news channel who most set the stage for Trump’s radicalizing rhetoric, Trump tweeted thanks for their praise.
Trump has spent his nearly two years in the White House consistently trashing those in the FBI tasked with investigating the president. While he praises those who have no involvement in that investigation as a way of showing his support for law enforcement, he is not a fan of any enforcement of the law as it pertains to himself and those close to him. This is a continued theme throughout his presidency.
Note that FBI Director James Comey was worthy of handshakes and praise following Trump’s election, but worthy of firing when he refused to say what Trump wanted him to. Michael Cohen was a great and completely honest guy until he came clean about Trump’s skirting of the law in order to save his own skin. The same goes for Paul Manafort.
Had the retired FBI agent who appeared on Fox News to praise Trump on Jeanine Pirro’s program mentioned the many issues with Trump’s presidency, including the inflammatory rhetoric and hatred he’s helped to undergird that led to this domestic terrorism in the first place, Rogers would not have been praised in Trump’s tweet. In fact, he wouldn’t have been invited to appear on any Fox News program at all.
