Very soon, Utah will vote on whether or not they should legalize medical marijuana. Ahead of this controversial vote on Proposition 2, one Utah senator, Jim Dabakis (D-UT) of Salt Lake City, decided that it was really strange that a bunch of lawmakers are going to vote on this legislation without having actually ever tried weed themselves, so he took it upon himself to go out to Vegas and buy some.
As you might expect, the results are hilarious, as Dabakis starts out by explaining that he’s never “tasted, smoked, eaten, shot up marijuana in my life.” Then he proceeds to open his little bag of gummies and lick one before popping it into his mouth. Don’t worry it’s all on video. Watch:
Until this moment, I was a marijuana virgin. Ending that now. At least one legislator ought to try the stuff before we change the law!

According to Vice:
‘Dabakis told VICE that the video doesn’t tell the whole story. Sitting in his hotel room about an hour and a half after he’d tried the gummy, he still wasn’t really feeling anything. So he decided to up his dosage. That’s usually a bad idea for first-time users, who can quickly find themselves way too high, but Dabakis was fine.’
Dabakis went on to say:
‘I took the half, and then I took another half, and not a lot happened. And so then I took another half, about a half an hour after that. And that’s where it kind of kicked in,” he said. “I just felt a kind of warm glow. It wasn’t life-changing, it didn’t seem like it was anything profound. I didn’t find God or anything.’
Debakis says that later that night he went to see a performance of Cirque du Soleil, which, as those of you who have been stoned before can probably imagine, was a pretty awesome experience.
A few days later, Senator Debakis made a follow-up video, just to record his thoughts on his experience with weed, where he said:
‘I’ll tell you, I think it’s a lot of ho-hum. I think the reefer madness crowd, you guys need to try it.’
Debakis continued:
‘It’s to remind my colleagues that, by the way, there’s a whole other world out there. Not everybody thinks that marijuana leads to—that it’s the gateway. I do enjoy kind of poking the bear. But there’s some serious issues that are underneath it that I hope I can get to by making a bit of a fool of myself.
