White privilege is not being able to imagine being harassed and stereotyped because of the color of your skin when doing something as simple as trying to order food in a restaurant. Unfortunately, Masud Ali and his friends don’t get that privilege.

When the young man and his friends went to a Chipotle in St. Paul, Minnesota, they were confronted by a restaurant employee who insisted they pay before ordering their food because “you never have money when you come in here.” The men were understandably upset, watching white customers order their food before paying.

The manager then came to the counter and insisted that the five men had been in the restaurant before and didn’t have the money for their food when they got to the register. Although the men insisted that wasn’t true, employees called the police.

Chipotle conducted an investigation of the incident, including speaking to the police who arrived on the scene. The company then released a statement regarding the action they took to address it.

‘Regarding what happened at the St. Paul restaurant, the manager thought these gentlemen were the same customers from Tuesday night who weren’t able to pay for their meal. Regardless, this is not how we treat our customers and as a result, the manager has been terminated and the restaurant [staff] has been retrained to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.’

In other words, it was a classic case of “all black people look alike.”

Despite this action, Ali said he is not convinced anything will change. Sadly enough, history has proven him right.
