Even considering that it was written by Donald Trump, the Saturday morning tweet from the White House was odd. It seems Trump has decided to try some reverse psychology, although he’s not even close to being smart enough for that to work.
Trump spent months on the campaign trail stumping for Republican candidates in the midterms. Throughout that time, his favorite punching bags were Chuck Schumer, Maxine Waters, and Nancy Pelosi. He’s insisted that she’s too liberal, too progressive, and a socialist. That’s because he either doesn’t understand what a socialist is or he’s hoping his crowds don’t.
On Saturday, however, he seemed to be endorsing Pelosi for Speaker of the House. Ever the divider, he clearly wants to take advantage of the current debate among Democrats over whether or not it’s time to find new, fresh leadership. Most Democrats in the House, who now hold a large majority over the GOP representatives, have publicly backed her, although 18 have vowed not to vote for her.
With 232 confirmed seats in the House, 18 will make little difference if the other 214 cast their votes for Pelosi. If Trump is trying to sway them to vote against her because he believes they’ll vote against anything he endorses, it isn’t going to work. Not only has she been in the House since 1987 and served as Speaker of the House from 2007-2011, but she also deserves credit for several Democratic reforms, such as the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
Pelosi is smarter and more accomplished than Donald Trump and no one is going to fall for his tactics.
Twitter was baffled and unimpressed by Trump’s Saturday morning posturing. See some of their comments below:
