President Donald Trump remains sorely out of place in the White House to the point that he can’t even welcome a Christmas tree to the White House without attracting mockery with his behavior.

Monday, as the winter holiday season got further underway, a horse drawn carriage pulled up to the White House with a Christmas tree in tow as part of the traditional preparations. Trump petted the backside of one of the horses while hanging onto his wife Melania’s hand — and well, most people probably wouldn’t go for that part of the animal when greeting it.

Concurrently, internet comments poured in mocking the president’s behavior (featured below).

Ironically enough, the Trumps have attracted scrutiny for their handling of Christmas decorum at the White House in the past. Last year, First Lady Melania Trump led an effort to decorate the grounds for the holidays that up until that point was among the few items she’d actually made herself known for while in her position.

In the time since — this past May, to be exact — she unveiled the “Be Best” campaign meant to highlight issues facing America’s children, but that hasn’t really gone anywhere. One of the original key pieces of documentation associated with the campaign was even largely plagiarized from an Obama era document.

Because this is the Trump administration we’re talking about, the ways the president and those close to him have attracted side-eye for their handling of the holiday season keep going and get even more substantive.

Speaking at the White House earlier this year for the National Day of Prayer, Trump commented:

‘We’re starting to say Merry Christmas when that day comes around. You notice a big difference between now and two or three years ago? It was going in the other direction rapidly, right? Now it’s straight up.’

He’s made a similar claim plenty of other times, but it’s just nonsense. The government never stopped saying Merry Christmas, and there was never any concurrent assault on Christianity either. The claims to the contrary are simply part of the right’s long claimed platform for pushing the most repugnant parts of their agenda in all their ugliness, including cutting off provisions for basic human rights for LGBT people, cutting off support for basic sexual health, and well beyond.

These interests have found the Trump administration’s support through such means as the president’s May 2017 “Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty” executive order, which delivered a “license to discriminate,” in the words of the Center for American Progress.

That continues on with a trend Vice President Mike Pence established before his time in D.C., having sought to open up protections for religion based discrimination while governor of Indiana.

Now, they’ve brought their toxic ideology to the White House. And the president just stands around acting strangely towards animals.
