After offering a statement that Mexico later denied, Donald Trump decided to tell the country he has so criticized in the past what would be “SMART” considering the current negotiations about a group of migrants escaping violence headed to the U.S. border.
In addition to misrepresenting the stage the deal with Mexico to keep the migrants in their country while asylum claims are processed in court is currently in, Trump repeated his campaign claims that other countries are not “sending their best,” but getting rid of undesirables by sending them to the U.S. This is untrue and has no basis in fact.
Trump also doesn’t seem to understand that neither Mexico nor any other Latin American country has a policy of preventing their citizens from leaving the country. That was a policy in East Berlin when a Communist government built the Berlin Wall to keep people from fleeing their government. At that time, the government also made claims about a wall protecting them from dangerous people, although it turned out to be nothing more than a plan to trap people inside the territory. The United States worked to have that wall, and that policy, destroyed.
American values are being traded for money and fear under the presidency of Donald Trump. No matter how much fear-mongering Trump does, this is a country founded by immigrants and made great by them. His policies do nothing but appease his racist fanbase.
