Ask President Donald Trump essentially any day of the year, and he’ll tell you his foreign policy is coming along nicely. It doesn’t matter if he’s sparked a trade war that’s threatening the livelihoods of untold numbers of American workers or the world is hurtling towards an abandonment of American democratic principles — everything is “very legal and very cool,” according to Trump, a claim he re-upped this Monday morning.

He touted a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping after the United States agreed to hold off on previously scheduled increases on tariffs on goods imported from China.

He ranted, in part:

‘My meeting in Argentina with President Xi of China was an extraordinary one… They intend to start purchasing agricultural product immediately. We make the finest and cleanest product in the World, and that is what China wants. Farmers, I LOVE YOU! President Xi and I have a very strong and personal relationship. He and I are the only two people that can bring about massive and very positive change, on trade and far beyond, between our two great Nations.’

Of course Trump thinks that in the middle of a trade war he sparked and that continues to overwhelm industry all around the world, he has some magic touch to be able to put everything back in place again. The saga of his overwhelming egotism coupled with lip service to foreign policy norms continues.

Besides the above, he also touted that he and Xi are supposedly poised to solve the issue of North Korea’s aggression and — along with Russian President Vladimir Putin — the ongoing “arms race” between the leaders’ nations — which Trump has explicitly encouraged in the past, to be clear.

He’s pushed for the United States to boost their nuclear and traditional military capabilities — and how he’s had a change of heart?

In short, the latest post-G20 summit round of foreign policy comments from the president represent another step in his wild egomania. The trade issues with China are far from solved, North Korea still has nuclear weapons, and so on, but that won’t stop him touting his leadership as extraordinary.
