There cannot be too many things Trump is known more for than his endless stream of lies. In fact, by his 601st day of presidency, he was estimated to have told no less than 5,000 lies by The Washington Post. Yet, on Saturday, Trump flexed his hypocritical muscles and tried to blast someone else for a false statement. Meanwhile, he told several lies about that false statement.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) absolutely in no way ever said that bullets “whizzed by” his head or that he saved “soldiers left and right.” Those are both false statements, or to put it more bluntly, outright lies.
Some controversy erupted in 2010 when The New York Times printed a story saying that Blumenthal misrepresented his service during Vietnam. The issue was around the use of the word during two speeches in which Blumenthal used the word “in” instead of “during.” Blumenthal did serve in the Marine Reserves during Vietnam after receiving draft deferments, just as Trump did, although his were in order to complete his college education. He then served stateside.
Trump received deferments for having bone spurs in his feet, although he then went on to play college sports, plus golf and tennis as an adult.
To be fair, Blumenthal also said two months before the Times printed their story that “Serving in the United States military gave me a perspective as well, even in the reserves, although I did not serve in Vietnam.”
Regardless of whether the misleading statements were intentionally made, no one has less room to criticize anyone for lying than Donald J. Trump.
