Donald Trump appears to be enjoying a lazy day in bed watching Fox News and tweeting from his phone. There has never been a better display of his utter ignorance of world events and lack of comprehension skills than his Saturday tweets about the protests currently happening in France.
There are a whole host of inaccuracies and ridiculousness involved in Trump’s tweet regarding the protests in France. Here are just a few:
- The Paris Agreement has nothing to do with Paris, or France, specifically. It was simply signed during the COP21, the 21st Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), held in Paris in 2015.
- 195 countries have signed on to the Paris Accord. Only two countries opposed it: Syria and Nicaragua. The United States is the only country to have initially signed on and then pulled back out, breaking its promise to address carbon emissions.
- There is no requirement for any country who agreed to ratify the Paris Accord to pay any money or raise taxes in order to meet a financial obligation.
- The Paris Accord has not, in any way, raised prices on fuel.
- The riots are related to higher gas prices and French President Emmanuel Macron’s attempts to cut taxes for the rich. This should sound familiar to anyone who’s followed Trump’s presidency and taken note of his one signature piece of legislation: the tax bill.
- There are no similar protests in 194 countries because of the Paris Agreement. It has had no effect on the economies of those countries, nor did it have an effect on the American economy.
- Trump has absolutely zero understanding of either the Paris Agreement nor the current protests in France.
