Donald Trump has been building his wall against strong women brick by brick, faster and faster. His latest attack was meant to verbally smack Mika Brzezinski — hard. She has co-hosted for years on the morning MSNBC show Morning Joe. In a flurry of irritation, she slipped and made a mistake.
Sure, it was wrong to make homophobic comments in reference to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo going to Saudi Arabia and chatting up the man who order the death of a Washington Post journalist. Rather than rebuke the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, the two men sat smiling.
Brzezinski was wrong, and she apologized. Her critics have been piling on, and then, Trump piled on top of all of them with his tweet that she should be “banned permanently” from television:
‘If it was a Conservative that said what “crazed” Mika Brzezinski stated on her show yesterday, using a certain horrible term, that person would be banned permanently from television….
‘….She will probably be given a pass, despite their terrible ratings. Congratulations to
@RichardGrenell, our great Ambassador to Germany, for having the courage to take this horrible issue on!’
Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough used to be friends with Trump. In fact, the air time they gave to him during the 2016 campaign was meant to be entertainment, but the Republican candidate scored a huge amount of free publicity through them.
After he was elected, the three fell out. Since then, it has been a duel of words. This example of her screwup was just fodder for Trump’s hatefest.
It all started when she said:
‘.@morningmika just asked if Mike Pompeo is a “wannabe dictator’s butt boy,” as homophobic a term as I’ve heard on national morning television. @MSNBC tried and failed to censor it, and did not transcribe her remark in the closed captioning.’
Brzezinski realized what she had just said immediately and apologized profusely:
‘Totally agree with you -SUPER BAD choice of words .. I should have said “water boy”… like for football teams or something like that.. apologize to
@SenatorDurbin too! SO SORRY!’
The ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, called her on her error. Then, he went a step too far, saying she was trying “to control” all gays:
‘accepting apologies is important. We all fail. But I don’t see that you’ve actually apologized to gays? Your words demean, mock and therefore try to control whole groups by minimizing our humanity.’
One response was far more reasonable:
‘I was with you,
@morningmika, right up to the “butt boy” comment. Try “toadie” or “lackey” or “stool pigeon” or “ass kisser,” or “traitor,” but maybe don’t equate homosexuality with Mike Pompeo carrying water for the murderous regime in Saudi Arabia.’
