At a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un that was much touted by the Trump administration as sure to earn Trump a Nobel Peace Prize, the two men smiled for cameras, shook hands during photo ops, and declared a new spirit of cooperation and denuclearization between the two countries.
None of that happened. No matter how much Trump tries to brag that he’s solved the North Korea problem, Kim Jong Un has continued to build new nuclear weapons and ignore the deal between the two men that included no follow-up from the U.S. government to ensure the dictator’s compliance.
As long as the powerful regime of North Korea remains wealthy, Kim Jong Un has never cared about how the people under his dictatorship have fared. Trump can promote peace and prosperity in North Korea should they only comply with Trump’s demands, but peace and prosperity have never been motivating factors for the leadership there. Their aims are power and wealth for themselves, not the people that they rule.
While Trump has promised the American people that they can now sleep peacefully with him at the helm in mitigating the threat of North Korea, it is just more smoke and mirrors. Nothing has changed other than the obvious public failure of Trump to change anything. With his North Korea promises slashed to bits, no spin on the negotiations between the two countries will be accepted. He has lost and there will be no Nobel Peace Prize.
