Anytime Trump is immersed in scandal, and there has been no other level of scandal than the numerous allegations of criminal acts over the past two weeks, he pivots to the success of the economy and his amazing skills as a businessman in deal negotiations. So many times, these public boasts turn out to be a figment of Trump’s imagination.
During the recent G20 Summit, Trump told his Twitter followers that he had met with President Xi of China and that they had reached an agreement for a trade deal that would end the tariffs imposed by both countries. As soon as Trump boarded Air Force One to head back to the U.S., the Chinese government let reporters know that no deal had been agreed to and that nothing had been signed. Trump was making up the story to distract from all of the negative coverage he was receiving at the time.
Trump seems to believe that as long as he can convince Americans that the economy is strong (a direct consequence of how great he is), the scandals will not be able to touch him. He’s even said before that he doesn’t know how a president who has been so successful on the economy can be impeached. Now that it is becoming clear that Trump’s economy is slowing in success following the Obama administration, the threat of backlash and a loss of support from his base looms larger than ever.
