If Donald Trump has a problem with strong women, and he does, then he is going to have a huge problem with the newly elected New York Attorney General-elect (AG) Letitia James. She is a powerful woman in an extremely powerful position, and now she has the Trump family in her sights.
James expressed interest in going after the president, members of his family, and close associates, if they committed crimes in her state. Part of that included shady Trump real estate deals, Trump Foundation crimes, Emoluments clause violations (personal profit while president), and an illicit meeting at Trump Tower,
She was endorsed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and gave her first interview to NBC News, since she was elected. James is going to “use every area of the law” to go after the Trumps:
‘We will use every area of the law to investigate President Trump and his business transactions and that of his family as well. We want to investigate anyone in his orbit who has, in fact, violated the law.’
When it comes to Mueller, James said:
“(He’s) doing an excellent job. I think he’s closing in on this president, and his days are going to be coming to an end shortly.’
Part of the reason that she won was that she campaigned calling for a bill to remake New York’s double jeopardy laws. James clearly understood that Trump will be making pardons. She wants to charge all the people POTUS pardons that fall under federal charges and convictions in New York state. Unfortunately, until the law changes, that might be beyond her reach:
‘I think within the first 100 days this bill will be passed. It is a priority because I have concerns with respect to the possibility that this administration might pardon some individuals who might face some criminal charges, but I do not want them to be immune from state charges. Taking on President Trump and looking at all of the violations of law I think is no match to what I have seen in my lifetime.’
James thinks that Trump’s business deals in real estate within the state could be a rich source of criminal information. The Trump family also used their nonprofit, the Trump Foundation, as their own piggy bank to pay for campaign and private issues. The family also took advantage of government subsidies, which may not have been legal.
Then, of course, there was the infamous Trump Tower meeting with the Russians in the early summer of 2016 with Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and eldest son Donald Trump Jr. Campaign manager at the time Paul Manafort was also at that meeting.
Since taking office, the man sitting in the Oval Office has benefitted from a number of personal business deals (Emoluments Clause violations). For instance, there was the Trump hotel just down the block from the White House where foreign leaders moved their business once he took office.
James followed another powerful woman, New York AG Barbara Underwood, who delved deeply into the family foundation irregularities. AG Eric Schneiderman started his investigation of it in 2016. After he resigned over sexual improprieties, Underwood took over.
Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz explained that Trump:
‘(Has) considerably more vulnerability.’
