President Donald Trump seems to think the world should fall down at his feet — and that’s barely a stretch. His administration imposed well-publicized tariffs on a variety of goods imported from nations around the world, and this Monday, he continued his response to the retaliatory tariffs some nations have imposed in response.
He commented on Twitter about another round of farm bailout payments meant to prop up some of those hit hard by the trade wars.
As he put it:
‘Today I am making good on my promise to defend our Farmers & Ranchers from unjustified trade retaliation by foreign nations. I have authorized Secretary Perdue to implement the 2nd round of Market Facilitation Payments. Our economy is stronger than ever–we stand with our Farmers!’
He makes himself out as some sort of hero in this situation, when in reality, the situation American farmers have found themselves in is as much his own doing as it is anyone else’s.
Does he really think that nations are just going to turn the other cheek to harsh tariffs meant to cripple their domestic industries? Trump’s ranting that their retaliatory tariffs are “unjustified” is like if someone threw a basketball right above them in the air, stood still, and then ranted at the “unjustified” bruise on their head that subsequently ensued. That’s the level he’s at here.
Down on planet earth, farmers and other producers across the United States have faced losses far above the cash that the Trump administration is dishing out. Between September and late October, roughly $356 million went out to farmers across America — while the Farm Bureau released numbers chronicling the fact that just in the state of Nebraska, farmers have lost as much as $1 billion and counting from issues like cancelled foreign orders for American goods. In the third quarter alone, exports of just soybeans from across the United States plummeted by $800 million.
Trump just likes to keep ranting on anyway.
