The attorney said that there was not just the one tape, where Cohen caught Donald Trump and the owner of The National Enquirer scheming about how to keep the information about the candidate’s sexual affairs from sinking the 2016 presidential election, according to The Wall Street Journal. It seemed that there was a criminal investigation into the hush money:
‘David Pecker, the chief executive of the company that publishes the National Enquirer, was granted immunity by federal prosecutors for providing information about Michael Cohen and President Trump in the criminal investigation into hush-money payments for two women during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to people familiar with the matter.’
Then, Davis continued talking about payments:
‘In exchange for immunity, Mr. Pecker the CEO of America Media, Inc. and a longtime friend of Mr. Trump has met with prosecutors and shared details about payments Mr. Cohen arranged.’
Davis appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation and offered further insight into his client’s relationship with Donald Trump. Unfortunately, the president called Cohen “a rat” when he heard about his former attorney testifying for the government. Davis was offended and said:
‘That’s the language of a mobster, not of the president.’
According to Davis, Cohen “took ownership and personal responsibility” for lying about payments made to alleged Trump mistresses during the 2016 campaign. The adult entertainer and porn producer plus the Playboy model had sex with Trump while Melania was caring for their new son. Davis said:
‘Let’s remember that Michael Cohen has corroborating evidence for everything that he has said.( Special counsel Robert Mueller) certainly does. On the issue of the purpose of the money paid to Stormy Daniels, (Donald Trump), the same man who called Michael Cohen a rat, denied on Air Force One to the American people that he knew anything about Stormy Daniels.’
In addition, Davis told the show’s host that Cohen “underwent a genuine transformation:”
‘Now that (Cohen) saw Donald Trump as president, he underwent a genuine transformation because he feared for his country and his family when Donald Trump was president. (Trump) is the top law enforcement officer of the country and who does he praise? He praises people who have lied and refused to cooperate — the opposite of what a president should do.’
Cohen’s adviser stayed away from whether his client had additional proof that the Russians had been able to influence the Trump presidential campaign. David preferred to keep quiet about the “evidence” Cohen had tucked away for a rainy day.
Then, Trump hit the truth about his own actions like a hurricane. The adviser said that talking about Cohen’s evidence could influence the ongoing investigations.
David admitted that none of the White House staff urged Cohen to not lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or to Congress. On the other hand, the president was fully cognizant that the commander-in-chief’s longtime personal attorney was headed into Congress, prepared to take a bullet on behalf of Trump. No one lifted a hand to stop Cohen, David said:
‘Not one person from the White House — I can tell you this — ever said, “Don’t lie.” He did need to be told that because he ended up lying and he’s regretted it and he’s going to jail for it.’
