Donald Trump is quickly losing support even in his own party thanks to his attempts to circumvent the Constitution, get away with crimes, foolishly pull troops out of Syria despite the dangers it will cause, and pass funding for an unnecessary border wall at any cost.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) responded to Trump’s tweets demanding that House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) invoke the nuclear option and ban filibusters to pass that five billion dollar demand for funding. After a morning in which even Fox News blasted Trump for his desperate moves in recent days, this is not a good sign for the president.
Had President Obama attempted to do the same in order to pass the ACA or raise the federal minimum wage, Republican heads would have exploded. Hatch, as well as several other Republicans, have noted that turnaround is fair play, and if McConnell follows Trump’s orders and circumvents the rules around a 60-vote majority necessary to pass a spending bill, it will open doors for Democrats to do the same.
The dissent comes following GOP Sen. Lindsay Graham’s (R-SC) rebuke of Trump’s decision to pull troops out of Syria and GOP Congress members rebuke of Trump’s support for Saudi Arabia following the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. This loss of support, combined with a quickly tanking economy, does not bode well for Trump’s 2020 chances should he even make it that far in his presidency.
Twitter had mixed feelings about Hatch moralizing over anything. Read some of their comments below:
