All the fears that everyone had when Donald Trump won the presidency have shown themselves to not be unfounded, and the recent government shutdown is no different. The president is desperate to please his base at a cost to every American and especially government workers who rely on a paycheck, especially at Christmastime.
Sen. Cortez Masto (D-NV) responded to the shutdown by making an endearing gesture to the people of her state. She announced on Twitter that she would be donating her entire salary to charity in her state until the government shutdown reaches a conclusion.
Amidst numerous crises hitting the White House by the day, Trump needed some kind of win he could brag about to his supporters. He has changed positions repeatedly until extreme right-wing pundits like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh called him out for failing on his promise to build a wall along the southern border to keep brown people out of the country. At the last minute, Trump decided that he would not sign any spending bill that didn’t include five billion dollars in funding for the wall.
Not only has every Democrat voted against this measure, but many Republicans did also. Trump has challenged every one of their previous statements about cutting government spending and reducing the deficit, making support of this president’s demands for a wall nothing less than hypocritical. Without enough support, Trump has now effectively caused a shutdown of the government in the final days before Christmas.
