Bob Corker Responds To Trump’s Sunday Night Twitter Attack On Him

President Donald Trump continues to belittle and demean the office of the presidency through his Twitter tirades. This Sunday, while the federal government languished under the weight of a shutdown over lack of funding, he decided it would be a good use of presidential time to berate an outgoing Republican U.S. Senator on Twitter. That Senator — Tennessee’s Bob Corker — responded this Sunday, pointing out that yet again, it’s the president who’s mired in a deep pit of nonsense.

Trump had originally ranted:

‘Senator Bob Corker just stated that, “I’m so priveledged to serve in the Senate for twelve years, and that’s what I told the people of our state that’s what I’d do, serve for two terms.”… Bob Corker was responsible for giving us the horrible Iran Nuclear Deal, which I ended, yet he badmouths me for wanting to bring our young people safely back home. Bob wanted to run and asked for my endorsement. I said NO and the game was over. I LOVE TENNESSEE!’

In reality, the world does not revolve around Donald Trump and Corker’s chief of staff Todd Womack has insisted Trump was actually on board with Corker running for re-election at one point, but the Senator declined. The president has consistently sought to turn that into Corker running from his responsibilities under the weight of the almighty Trump — or whatever.

Corker has rebuffed the president on a number of issues, including — in response to his latest jabs — Trump’s long sought border wall dividing the U.S. and Mexico. The latest federal government shutdown hinges on one issue — the administration’s insistence on billions of dollars for that wall, despite the president’s past insistence (against all odds) that Mexico would pay for it.

Corker dismissed Trump’s insistence he’d wanted to run for re-election but was scared of Trumpism by quipping:

‘Yes, just like Mexico is paying for the wall… #AlertTheDaycareStaff’

Corker has previously compared the White House with Trump at the helm to an adult daycare center.

Corker is solidly on the side opposite the president in the current shutdown fight, dismissing Trump’s concern about the border and push for a wall as manufactured outrage. He had to be goaded into even voting to open debate on a House-approved funding package that included provisions for the wall. That measure has not even been presented for an actual vote in the Senate thanks to Democrats’ stated opposition to approving one penny for Trump’s racist vanity project that has gone, apparently, from being an actual wall to being comprised of “steel slats.”

The government will remain partially shut down until at least after Christmas, since Congress doesn’t reconvene until later this week, and White House Office of Management and Budget chief Mick Mulvaney has acknowledged the shut down could stretch into January — when Corker is out of office and Democrats become the majority in the House, among other shifts.

In the middle of all of this, Trump thinks tweeting jabs at members of his own political party can be the best use of his time.
