While the country continues to deal with Trump’s government shutdown, numerous Democrats have vowed to donate part or all of their next paycheck to various charities. Joining John Hoeven (R) and Heidi Heitkamp (D), both of North Dakota, is Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono.
Just last week Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada) bowed to donate her salary to charity, stating:
‘I cannot take a salary during a government shutdown knowing that so many federal workers in Nevada and across the country will go without pay.
‘I’ll be donating my salary to a Nevada charity for every day of the Trump shutdown.’

Today, December 28, 2018, marks the sixth day of Trump’s shutdown, bringing the total of shutdowns on Trump’s watch to a near-total of 10 full days. No president in recent history has had this happen, so that’s an accomplishment that Trump should not be proud of.
Today it was announced that popular Hawaii Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono will donate her entire next check to food banks across her state.
In a press release that came out today, Hirono states, in part:
‘More than 2,500 federal workers in Hawaii are either furloughed or working without pay during the holidays because Donald Trump shut down the government.
‘As long as Donald Trump refuses to re-open the government, I will be donating my salary to Hawaii’s food banks — who serve nearly one in eight Hawaii residents in need.’
This is not the first time that Hirono has donated her salary to charity during a lapse in government funding, resulting in a partial shutdown- in January this year, she generously donated her salary to Hawaii’s 14 Federally Qualified Community Health Centers. She also donated during a shutdown in 2013.

Hirono has been a harsh critic against Trump since his first day in office. This week has definitely proven itself to be sort of a tipping point for the Hawaii senator, as made evident in the below video where she drops a “bullshit” on live television while referencing Trump’s hard stance on the border wall.
As it stands, Republicans and Democrats have not reached a deal in Washington and it is likely that the government will remain partially shut down through 2019.
Trump honestly just doesn’t seem to care much and will continue to run the country like a baby who will hold hostage its people, all to prove a point.
These stunts are and will continue to politically cost him, as his current approval rating among Americans is his all-time low.
