President Donald Trump has a perpetually desperately twisted view of the world. This weekend, he again took to Twitter to tout the supposed need for his long sought border wall blocking off Mexico, claiming this time that it’s justified by the fact that the Obamas have a security wall around their D.C. home.
He ranted:
‘President and Mrs. Obama built/has a ten foot Wall around their D.C. mansion/compound. I agree, totally necessary for their safety and security. The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!’
In other words, in Trump’s perception, the entirety of the United States should be as guarded as a family home belonging to a former presidential family, which reeks of the fatalistic fearmongering that Trump’s become so known for. He thinks that just beyond the southern border, there are hordes of evildoers just waiting to do Americans harm and launching invasions of the U.S. when they can — and that’s not a stretch from his rhetoric. It’s a rough paraphrase of his exact rhetoric.
It’s a stupid and shortsighted fantasy, but it’s what the president puts forward anyway. There are neither large numbers of gang members crossing the border without documentation nor “known or suspected terrorists” being discovered at the border at anywhere remotely near the level his administration has claimed. On top of these issues in the administration’s argument, undocumented border crossings overall have continued their overall downward trend over time.
The federal government currently continues to languish under a partial shutdown sparked by Trump’s refusal to approve any funding if he doesn’t get the money he wants for his wall — although that hasn’t stopped the Trump team from claiming the shutdown is the Democrats’ fault anyway.
