Samuel Patten has a dark history. He was a lobbyist working in Washington, D.C., and his link to the special counsel Robert Mueller could still pull down the entire Trump administration.

Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s attack on the 2016 presidential election and the Trump campaign’s conspiracy with Moscow continues to spread its reach into ever more important participants. Patton has been surprisingly important to the special counsel even though, he is a basically low-profile person. He is still singing for the special counsel.

It seems, Patten admitted to crimes regarding Trump. He illegally obtained inauguration tickets for his Ukrainian client, a man closely linked to former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, plus a Russian associate Konstantin Kilimnik. The former chair is now sitting in jail awaiting sentencing.

Patten began working with Mueller and the Department of Justice (DOJ) even before Manafort pled guilty to his  criminal charges. Mueller’s people claimed that Kilimnik had ties to the Russian intelligence hackers who attacked the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in  2016.

Mueller charged Manafort with a number of financial crimes and foreign lobbying violations, then he tried to flip him. The special counsel’s office offered him a charge of tax and bank fraud related to his lobbying efforts in the Ukraine. Manafort pretended to accept the deal, but he actually served as a mole for Donald Trump to the Mueller team and fed information about the investigation back to the president.

It was not clear whether the special counsel was aware of what Manafort was doing before the illegal act came to light. If Mueller was, then he could have been playing a three-level game of law, feeding Manafort information meant to gain the special counsel more secret information and/or mislead the Trump team.

The special counsel’s prosecutors had lined up Patten to testify against Manafort in the second trial. He could testify against Manafort in trial or be used against a criminal target.

Once the prosecutors had all of Patten’s cooperation, they typically would have gone on to sentencing. Apparently, Patten is still useful to Mueller’s people.

As it turned out, the unusually rare secret court filling on December 31, 2018 gave the public no information. It simply updated the judge. For some reason, Patten’s attorneys submitted a secret status report, and it was submitted under seal.

The Washington D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office filed charges against Patten a the end of summer. Part of the agreement included Patten admitting that he lied when he testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee headed by a Republican. He was also to tell the committee about providing inauguration tickets.

Patten told the special counsel he did not register as a foreign lobbyist for the Ukrainian government, too. He managed to divert $50,000 from a Ukrainian oligarch to the Presidential Inaugural Committee as a sneaky and illegal way of getting four inauguration tickets.

Mueller’s people have kept Patten under covers, but he was the first person the DOJ charged, according to CNN:

‘(He was charged with) helping a foreigner secretly funnel money into a Trump political event.’

At Patten’s plea hearing, the special counsel participated. That was unusual, too. Several of Mueller’s attorneys went to the hearing to see the lobbyist cooperation agreement play out. The D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office and Mueller have been working together on several other crime cases.
