President Donald Trump can not escape the reality that his long sought border wall blocking off Mexico is not actually based in real, legitimate issues. Instead, it’s based in long term racism such as that perpetrated by the Ku Klux Klan, as new Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) pointed out this week.

She shared:

‘“Build a wall of steel, a wall as high as Heaven” against immigrants. – 1924 Ku Klux Klan convention. We know our history, and we are determined not to repeat its darkest hour. America is a nation of immigrants. Without immigrants, we are not America.’

Ironically enough considering the quote, Trump has just recently been claiming that a specifically steel wall will be constructed along the border with Mexico instead of the concrete barrier he’s long pushed for. He’s claimed that he made the change in his proposal at the urging of Democrats, but it’s not immediately clear what if any Democrats actually suggested the change.

It’s not the first time he’s completely made up agreement with his plans, having previously lied that “some” former presidents had supported his wall proposal. All living ex-presidents say they didn’t.

The president has remained locked in a stalemate with Democrats over government funding, refusing to approve any at all if he doesn’t get billions of dollars that he wants for his border wall. That has pushed the government into a partial shutdown that’s fast approaching three full weeks in length. This past Tuesday night, he attempted to make the case for his wall in a primetime address from the Oval Office broadcast across the nation that proved full of racist lies and misrepresentations just like Ocasio-Cortez indicates.

He and his associates have claimed that because crime persists among undocumented immigrant populations, the border wall is needed. During his address, he pointed to the emotional turmoil that victims of these crimes have been put through, and in so doing, attempted to cast an entire population as guilty of the crimes of a few. It’s not as though you see the Trump team calling for walls around white people every time they commit a heinous crime.

Plenty of racists showed up in Ocasio-Cortez’s comments.
